So part of the inspiration behind this trip are Shane and Amy Bugbee. In 2007 they started a year long trek across the country documenting the underside of the election process. They set off in a truck with their dog, turtle and under 200 dollars and survived a year on the power of social media.
I met them when they came through Austin during South by Southwest and had a great time hanging out with them. Instead of taking the easy story about SxSW they crawled the underside, visiting the parties that SxSW often tries to shut down and talked to locals about what SxSW actually means to the locals. It was inspiring to hear the a side of the story other than the official party line.

It is not to late to help them out with their journey. They are making a book and film about their adventures, interviews and travels that you can support via a donation button on their site. More importantly right now they are vying for a SxSW panel. From their website:
reasons to vote for us to speak @ SXSW:
we represent anti-social media, the forgotten zip codes, and the creative culture that truly drives technology.
our aim is to bring the entrepreneurial spirit of the true creative, to a world of squares content in cubical living and ikea spending sprees… our target is the suites who try to use social media as another sales platform, continuing to clog it up with old world marketing, forgetting that ’social media’ is all about the free exchange of ideas… a place where folks can get together and communicate, open and honestly… without so many middle men and restrictions.
we ask that you vote for us thru the sxsw panel picker, a direct link is provided below, or search the bugbee name after hitting the INTERACTIVE FESTIVAL PROGRAMMING PROPOSALS link.

our sxsw panel idea is an extension of an article amy did for chris pirillo here:

and it’s all based on our year long road trip documented in part here: http://www.ayearatthewheel.com
